Choosing the right Color for your plantation shutters

What color should your plantation shutters be to complement your home?

Shutters can be a great investment for your home. Well made shutters can last a lifetime providing quality light control and adding a nice decor element to your home. But whenever your picking out a set of plantation shutters you will want to keep in mind the color. The color of your shutters can have a massive impact on the exterior look of your home. Picking the wrong color can mean your shutters clash with the rest of the house, leaving it looking patched together and ugly. You wouldn’t want to invest so much time and money into picking out some shutters just to have them look ugly on your home would you? Kirtz has some tips on picking out the right color for any style of home.

It’s important to keep in mind the color palette of your home when picking out shutters for it. Most exteriors are designed around 3 main colors. The Base, The Trim, and The Accent.

The Base color refers to the main dominating color of the house. This color will cover most of the exterior of the house and is usually the color most people will think of when thinking of the house. Ex. The “Blue” house.

The Trim is the series of lines running at the base and sometimes in the middle of the house. The Trim is usually colored a white or cream though some homes will use a darker color. Others still will use another more adventurous color on the trim of their homes.

The Accent is the one to pay attention too though. The accent is the color of Doors, windows, and yes, shutters. The accent is the place to get creative with a home’s color palette as these are the easiest parts of a home to replace.

Plantation Shutters

Plantation Shutters for your Sunroom

Sunrooms can be a great addition to any home, but in certain parts of the country they can be unbearable during the summer and winter months. Here’s how adding plantation shutters can help solve this problem.

So how do Plantation Shutters help keep your Sunroom bearable?

Here are just some of the ways Plantation Shutters can help your Sunroom:

  • Shutters add greater energy efficency, saving you money
  • They allow greater control of intense sunlight that can fade furnishings
  • And they add beauty and charm to your sunroom

In order to maximize the original purpose of the room (openness to the outside) there are a few design tips to keep in mind.

  • Large Louvers will help to maintain the openness of the sunroom.
  • Hidden tilt will let you obstruct the least amount of your view while getting the most out of your sunroom.
  • Be sure to order the largest panel as you can reasonably fit in your windows. This will minimize the presence of stiles taking up more space than needed. Remember, Kirtz custom built shutters up to 38″ wide are all under warranty. We can make larger shutters if needed, consult a sales rep to learn more.

Kirtz shutters offers extensive customization for your needs.

Typically, the standard plantation shutters will be set in a frame, and then the shutters will be hinged to the frame.

Another option for those with certain sunroom configurations is to put your shutters on a sliding track. The benefits of this is that one shutter panel will slide over another, allowing you to fully open up 1/2 of the window without swinging the shutter into the room. Doing this can make it much easier to place furniture in your sunroom. However, it’s important to determine beforehand if this application will work for your sunroom. The reason for this is that a slider shutter frame is deeper than other shutter frames. Typically slider shutter frames go 5 1/2 ” deep, compared to 2-21/2″ deep for other shutter styles.

Plantation Shutters Should Be Made From Wood

3 Pros of Real Wood Plantation Shutters

Whenever you’re buying plantation shutters, one of the things you need to consider is the type of material your shutters are going to be made from. There are 3 main types of materials for shutters. These include; wood, synthetic, and a composite. Kirtz Shutters is here to explain why wood is the best material in the long run.

Investment: There are many reasons that wood shutters are a great investment. Wood provides a clean, timeless look that last for years. Synthetic plantation shutters have come a long way in replicating wood, but there’s a real texture that can’t be matched by synthetic or composite materials. The biggest reason to invest in all wood shutters is that they can increase your home’s value. Home-Buyers know the value of these shutters and will pay extra for them.

Flexibility: Wood is an easier material to work with over synthetics. Wood can be finished and re-finished to match a room as it changes over time. Meaning you don’t have to buy new plantation shutters every time you want to change the look of a room. Additionally, authentic wood shutters come in a wide variety of colors compared to their synthetic counterparts. The classic look of real wood also blends well with many styles giving you more flexibility when designing a room.

Light Control: Plantation shutters made from true wood also give you more control over the amount of light in your room. Shutters can close completely to keep the sun totally out. You also have a larger range of angles to maneuver the light around, which means that you can always make a room look its best no matter where the sun is shining inside.

Wood shutters can last for years and add a peerless, classic look to your home. Call us today to learn how you can get some of the best plantation shutters around! Call Kirtz Shutters at 1-800-416-6455!

Tips For Taking Care Of Your Plantation Shutters

How To Keep Plantation Shutters In Top Shape

Plantation shutters can add a real sense of style to your home and with proper maintenance, they can last a lifetime! Kirtz Shutters is here to give you a few tips on how you can keep your shutters looking great and functioning perfectly.

Weekly Cleanings: Everyone knows that keeping dust off your plantation shutters is key to keeping them looking chic. Firstly, a weekly cleaning is sufficient to keep dust at bay, with a more in-depth dusting once a month. Of course, they’re are a few habits that can actually damage the shutters you’re trying to keep clean. That’s why we say never use soapy water to clean your plantation shutters. Soapy water can damage the shutter material and reduce the lifespan of the exotic wood. Instead, use a duster or slightly damp cloth to clean your plantation shutters.

Repairing Paint Chips: It’s inevitable; keep anything long enough and it will start to show wear and tear. Eventually, no matter how good the paint job on your plantation shutter, it will eventually begin to crack and tear away. For small repairs, you can use a foam or touch up brush to smooth over any kind of scratch, further prolonging the life of your plantation shutters.

Keeping The Louvers Tight: If the screws holding your louvers in place start to loosen, making it hard to keep the louvers up, you can adjust how tight, or loose, they are. To do this, open the shutter panel and adjust the tension screw found on both sides of the shutter panel using a phillips head screwdriver.

Using these tips can help you get the most out of your shutters. Of course, accidents happen. That’s why all Kirtz Shutters come with a lifetime guarantee! If you’re looking for plantation shutters, call now to get started, at 1-800-416-6455!
